Speaking on ‘Establishing the Oxford of the East: Sir Syed’s Vision of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College’, the Guest-of-Honour, Dr Faiza Abbasi (Director, UGC HRDC AMU) said: “Sir Syed deeply analysed the reasons for sufferings of Indians after the 1857 revolt and came up with a vision of imparting modern education. He narrated anecdotes from Sir Syed’s life and discussed his struggle for establishing the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College, which later became the Aligarh Muslim University. “Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was a pioneer who recognised the need of revolutionising the outlook of the society he lived in, his indispensable contribution to propagating education and scientific awareness remains unparalleled”, said Prof F S Sherani (Coordinator, Cultural Education Centre). The lecture programme was held at the Cultural Hall of the Maulana Azad Library to observe Sir Syed’s 124th death anniversary.
